The 3 story building that houses J’s Restaurant and J’s Down
Under was built in 1915 by William J. Schmidt.
The top floor was a hospital until 1950 consisting of three rooms and
two doctors; then became a clinic, an appliance store and now is used for
offices.
The main floor was Schmidt Drugstore until 1950, Wagner Drug
for approximately 21 years and J’s
Pizza
Garden before becoming
J’s Restaurant.In 1947, a fire raged
the drugstore and threatened the hospital however no deaths or injuries
occurred.Wagner Drug was the first
business in
Buffalo
to have air conditioning.
The bottom floor was an auto repair center before being
transformed into J’s Down Under.
Ghost Stories
As with any old building, J's building has it's own spirit and her name is Juanita. Past and present employees claim they have heard and seen her on the main and top floors of the building.Very little is known about her.
The building next door use to be a butcher
shop and there is said to be two ghosts roaming around there, one is a small child
and the other a grandpa.
History of Current Owners
Patty & Dale purchased the bar on January 1, 1990 and will be celebrating their 20th anniversary
January 1, 2010.
Patty worked at J’s Down Under approximately 6 years
prior to buying the bar and can still be found bartending almost every day. Dale cooks in the restaurant and handles the maintenance of the business when he isn't running his own construction company, Peavey Construction.
